The tune is Irish in origin,adapted to an English folk song..The green willow wearing is an ancient Celtic tradition.

"All around my hat" is of english origin,Sung about a girl who has been transported to australia. The green willow was a cymbol of mourning.The song was later adapted by republican Peadar Kearney...

I remember my older sister going mad upon me, because I did like this song in 1976!! Of course, she liked more all the other songs of Steeleye Span (less commercial and more deeply Scottish Folk Music!!!) But 32 years later, I still very like this one...Thx hollowmoor!
