My former neighbour who is now living as pensioneer in Canada was an 1WO on a german U-boat in WW2. He told me that this exactly happened to an US-Navy destroyer which get an torpedo impact while persecuting their submarine several hours after they had laid mines in the New-York harbour in 1943. The torpedo cracked the Kiel of the destroyer. In this case the stability fails and the ship brokes through in 2 parts.
