yeah, that was my advice for my first meet ever. i actually moved up to doing the slide every single meet. at this point, i'm moving up to collegiate discus, which will be a new and exciting challenge. let's see how well i do my second year.

Hello,I am a former collegiate discus thrower. I think your coach is right if you are an absolute begginer. If this is your first season throwing and you haven't practiced the full throw (spin), then your coach is right. However, it is always better to do the full throw because it serves as good practice and it will be the only way to throw far. Best of luck.

My first meet is this tuesday, I'm a senior and high school. This is my one and only season to get some good results. My tips that I'm passing on from my coach:First throw you take, do it standing, do it well. Just get the disc out onto the field and see what you're throwing is like in comparison to others. If you've learned the spin and feel confident, take your last throw spinning, or you can do the South African as an alternative.
