Don't listen to the media. And I know that Reagan didn't bring down the USSR, however, he opposed them so strongly because they were practically enslaving millions and were a threat to security.

If you look closely at how leaders in Russia, the Ukraine, the Baltics, and Central Asia came to the decision to dissolve the union, it had nothing to do with defense spending, and Reagan was never even mentioned. He was irrelevant to the process.
